Inspirations for Landscapes… are just the beauty of the earth. We are blessed to be a part of such a diverse and beautiful land. Seasons, weather and location all are change factors. I don’t do justice to the beauty but I enjoy trying to extend the moment by painting this scenic world.
Inspired by… the morning sun drenched empty beach contrasted with the storm clouds that will arrive for the day. The palm trees on the distant beach walk break the landscape between the sandy beach and the vast sky filled with storm clouds rolling in for the day. The beach at Washington Oaks was empty and […]
Inspired by… the promise of a fun day at the Le Carousel with the atmospheric backdrop of the tall buildings surrounding Bryant Park. The empty lawn leading the the carousel provides a calming repose among the hectic activity of the families and busy holiday shoppers. For children of all ages the carousel always requires a visit.
Inspired by… a stunning December sky sunset. It was intensely bright, almost blinding with the yellow and orange reflections on the clouds. I was driving in early December and the sunset was brilliant. As I headed west the sun was so bright it blacked out everything close to me. At the top of the hill […]
Inspired by… the tall grasses on the sandy, winding path to a Normandy Beach. The scene of terror during WWII, now a peaceful and inviting path. The day we were there, the gentle ocean breeze made the grasses sway softly. It was an easy stroll to the beach from the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. […]
Inspired by… the pastoral view of my friend Ralph’s barn and surrounding summer fields on the family farm in East Tennessee. Ralph’s multi-generational family farm was next to my family’s farm. Conservation and maintenance of the farm was a source of pride for him. It was a respite for the rest of us. <back to […]
Inspired by… the expansive sky that dwarfs the big yellow school bus and the three high school students at the bus drop-off. Driving through Idaho one afternoon we stopped for the afternoon school bus dropping off students. The sky was so big it made the bus and students look tiny in comparison. <back to landscapes>
Inspired by… the tangled and thick tree moss hanging from the tree branches in the Washington Hoh Rain Forest. On some limbs only the thick moss was visible. The multiple layers of watercolor, charcoal, conte sticks and pastels create the thickness and depth of the multi colored moss. <back to landscapes>
Inspired by…the wildness of the tangled vines and branches surrounding the meandering creek in the woods. The morning light provided a range of depth in the landscape. The atmospheric light of the distant trees contrasted to the darkly shadowed bank of the creek bed. The texture of the large, gnarly and sunlit tree in the […]
Inspired by… an imaginative view below the ground of a Birch tree, how does the root system support the large tree; is the Birch tree securely rooted? The bare limbs of the birch tree in winter expose the structure of the tree which is only fully seen when the limbs are without leaves. The lower […]
Inspired by… the darkness deep in the Washington Hoh Rain Forest. The trees, dripping with moss, were so thick the sun was blocked out. Hiking through the Hoh Rain Forest at Olympia Nation Park the trees and moss were the highlights. The spruce and hemlock can grow up to 300′ tall and are heavily laden […]
Inspired by…the idea of collaging my favorite tree landscapes into one large interconnected landscape scene. Research shows that trees have a network that allows them to communicate with other trees. These scenes are from across the country; what if they could share their wisdom with trees from another region? In this landscape drawing we can […]
Inspired by… the early morning sunrise behind the purple clouds over the ocean at Hilton Head beach and the colorful sky reflections on the sand. A friend that lives on the island shared this photo from a morning walk. The soft colors of the sky are reflected on the smooth sand by the waters edge. […]
